Adding a blurred outline in Aseprite

Cat with blurred outline title image

Learn how to add a blurred outline to a sprite quickly in Aseprite. The blurred outline blends nicely with the background and helps the image stand out.

Aseprite

Aseprite is an image editor designed primarily for pixel art drawing and animation.

Step 1

Create a new layer for your sprite and another layer for your background. Put your sprite on the sprite layer, and your background on your background layer.

Step 2

Next we will add a solid outline.

Select the sprite layer, and go to:

Edit -> FX -> Outline

Select a colour for the outline colour, and press ok.

Step 3

Add an outline again, but this time change the opacity of your outline colour to roughly half.

Repeat the process as many times as you want. Select the last outline colour and further reduce the opacity each time. It should create a nice falloff which blends nicely with the background.
